Queens Hospital in Romford

Queen’s Hospital in Romford is a large, modern NHS teaching hospital operated by the Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust. Serving approximately 800,000 people, it was purpose-built and opened in 2006 to replace several older hospitals in the area. The hospital consists of multiple interconnected circular towers surrounded by low-rise buildings that house wards, diagnostics, theatres, and an effective layout for inpatient and outpatient services.

It features an emergency department, hyper-acute stroke unit, specialist neuroscience centre, renal dialysis, a birthing centre, 16 operating theatres, and a helipad for urgent air transfers. As a teaching site affiliated with Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, the hospital plays a key role in training future clinicians.

Within its neurosurgery division, Queen’s offers a comprehensive range of adult treatments for brain, spine, and peripheral nerve disorders. This includes specialist programmes for brain tumours, cerebrovascular diseases, spinal conditions, functional neurosurgery, and peripheral nerve issues, supported by a dedicated neurosurgical ward, operating theatres, and a neuro-intensive care unit. The hospital functions as the regional neurosurgical centre for Essex and surrounding areas, providing training for junior surgeons and engaging in clinical trials and research collaborations.

The vascular neurosurgery and interventional neuroradiology team treat complex cerebrovascular conditions such as aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), subarachnoid haemorrhages, arteriovenous fistulas, cavernous malformations, intracerebral haemorrhage, and other vascular disorders of the brain and spinal cord.
